Author's Review
Can there possibly be a better house album than Daft Punk's Homework? I don't think so. I'll admit, I jumped on the bandwagon way too late, but I now wonder how I existed as a House DJ without it. The album is an absolute tour-de-force of French house, grabbing you from the funky filtering of "Daftendirekt" and not letting up until the end of "Funk AD", a humourous track consisting of "Da Funk" being played backwards.
Okay, mainstreamers already know about how wonderful "Da Funk" and "Around The World" are, even though I'd have to consider it one of my least favorite tracks on the album. "Burning" was also released as a single, but just didn't do it for me. "Revolution 909" is the first real killer cut on the disc. Great build-ups and a stompin' beat that just make you wanna join Thomas Bangalter & Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo in whatever freedom fight they're on.
I've read a ton of reviews, and everyone seems to overlook the best three tracks on the disc:
"Phoenix" - Oh, my God, what a tune! Great to mix with because of the long break in the intro, and catchy as hell once it hits you. The bassline is funky as anything I've heard, and the hook is hypnotizing.
"Indo Silver Club" - the type of track that makes you do a double-take at the CD player and say "What the hell are they doing?"
Seriously sick vibes here with a great hook and that bouncy acid line. The only track on the album where they sample something else, but it works.
"Fresh" - The beginning of Daft Punk's trademark washing machine sound. Very relaxing.
