Disappointed in Durability
Date of Review: Jan 25, 2001
The Bottom Line: Just be aware that when you buy a mega-storage player you may be in the shop more than you were with your single or 5-CD changer.
As other reviewers have noted, this player is a great buy for the money. The many features available to the aficionado are impressive. However, ours is already going into the shop and we have owned it for less than 6 months and it has been well cared for during that time. Unfortunately I am currently going through the painful process of removing all 300 CD's in order to get this thing in for repairs. Anyone who has taken the time to organize, load and then manually input notes on this many CD's will feel my pain. But after 6 months of normal use the mechanism that draws CD's in from the carousel for play is malfunctioning and no longer picking up CD's. Although the player is still under warranty this little episode will cost us the time and agony of unloading, reloading and yes re-entering all the information for each CD because the player erases all the data after it's unplugged for a certain amount of time. Not to mention the loss of use of the player while it is repaired. In speaking with a technician over the phone I was led to believe that this is not an uncommon scenario with these players. Not necessarily specific to Sony, but common among complicated mega-storage players.
