Product Review

A Decent Monitor

by   noisycricket ,   May 6, 2008

Pros:  digital affords privacy, affordable

Cons:  white noise, limited range

The Bottom Line:  Recommended for families that need the privacy afforded by digital technology. If privacy isn't of concern, another monitor may be the way to go.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

We have been using this monitor for a year now. While we've had our problems with the performance and sound quality, we would purchase this monitor again because it is the most affordable digital monitor we could find.

We needed a digital monitor since our entire neighborhood is filled with babies (and their monitors). Although we're a close-knit community, we didn't look forward to all the neighbors knowing that my husband never remembers to empty the diaper pail or that I left a wet towel on the floor again. From that perspective, this monitor has been fantastic - we haven't overheard a single conversation from any of our neighbors. And since everyone still treats as though we're normal, we're assuming that they haven't heard our "discussions" either!

The sound quality is a bit poor. There is a bit of white noise in the background, so at times the volume needs to be turned up rather high in order to hear over the static. We found that it depends on where the receiver is located. If I move it away from my alarm clock or handheld PDA/cell phone, it works better. The range isn't fantastic either. Reception drops off in the basement of our 2 storey house, although we found that placement usually fixes this too - closer to a window is best. It does not work well through stone walls (although I've yet to find a monitor that does).

Finally, the battery life is respectable - about 2 to 3 hours. The battery is rechargeable and for the most part, we keep the receivers in the charging bases.
