Garmin eTrex Legend Handheld GPS Receiver

I bought this as my first GPS unit. My father owns a StreetPilot, which is MUCH larger, but has an easier (in my mind) user interface and larger display.

The Legend is ultra-small, and because of that it's missing some of the more common features found in larger units. It's a bit slow to acquire satellites, but once it's locked it hangs on tight and seems to acquire a large number of them. Accuracy is quite good, although it's a bit sensitive to overhead cover. The default maps are good, and can be improved with Garmin's add-on CD's like Topo Maps and MetroGuide. Within a vehicle, and external antenna would be a boon, but with an adequate view of the sky, it will hold its lock.

The joystick control can be vexing at times, but overall I like the way it handles. I have used this unit on a motorcycle, for which it is well suited as long as it is mounted openly and not stuffed in a tankbag, where the joystick button can be pressed.
