GE gets it right on PDW machines.

Date of Review: Aug 21, 2002

The Bottom Line:  The PDW XL series GE Profile dishwashers are well designed, with a tall tub and nylon racks. They should be strongly considered when shopping for your next machine.
GE's latest line of dishwashers are listed as PDW models. They have a full length CONTOURED door, tall tub, NYLON coated racks with NO center tower cutout, and the tines are ball tipped for maximum life. I bought the PDW7300. It has all the features that were lacking in the previous Triton series. Both upper and lower racks hold tall items easily, and now I can put a dutch oven pan in the lower rack without having to work around the center tower cutout. The racks are nylon coated, which is very important, because you want your machine to look as good 5 years from now as the day you bought it. PVC coated racks will not last as long, and show wear and rust.

There are three wash arms, one under each rack, and one on the top of the tub, all direct feed. The heating element is now a multiwattage unit, so it is on high for Anti-bacteria wash, and Added-Heat selection, but on low for drying. By drying on low heat, allows you to put plastic items in the lower rack and they won't warp. The dry cycle is different in that on all selections except speed wash, cycle length is 30 minutes. On the speed cycle it is only 8 minutes. So dishes run on this cycle can be a little damp in spots that trap water, if you try and take them out right after the cycle ends. If they sit for a little while longer, they are okay.

The soap dispenser in the door is located next to the part of the lower rack that has fold down tines. If you fold them down and put a large pot or pan there upside down, this obstructs the water from the lower spray arm, and if you use gel soap, a little might remain in the dispenser after the cycle is done. The upper arm can't reach it either because the soap door flips up and hits the upper rack, where it sticks out perpendicular to the door, until you open the dishwasher door. Then it flips up the rest of the way. This is only a slight problem with only gel soaps and only when you put a large pan in that corner of the lower rack. I'm not sure that this was worth mentioning, but so far, it's the only thing I've found that could be improved on.

The rinse aid dispenser has a clever design, in that it has a clear window you look into to see a stair stepped mirrored bottom. So when the door is opened flat, you can tell at a glance how low you are getting on rinse agent, without having to remove a plug or anything.

The control panel has been reduced from 6" tall to 4", for a more streamlined look. Sequence lights, illuminated with green diodes, lets you know the progress of the cycle. For all who need to know about every button, the selections are as follows: Rinse only, China crystal, Speed cycle, Normal wash, Cookware, and Anti-bacteria. Enhancement buttons (used to be called Options) are 2-4-8 hour delay, Added Heat, Prewash, and Heated Dry. The machine is available in Bisque, White, and Black.

Overall, I think GE has designed a very good machine in the PDW models that are definitely worth a look. I don't know of any other machine currently on the market that has a full length contoured door, it really looks stylish. I can't tell you about durability yet, but my mother in law got 10 years out of her GE, which is about average.

PLEASE NOTE: The PDW Profile XL models are now the top of the product line. Any existing Profile Performance models, which used to be the top, will be phased out as time goes on. This applies to all GE appliance

UPDATE: Anyone who reads "Have used better than GE" review, needs to know that this guy is NOT reviewing the PDW7300 dishwasher. I left a comment on his review to that effect, but he refused to respond to my post. He is reviewing an older previous model GE, and is too stubborn or stupid to admit it. His only goal is to promote the Maytag line of products (given away by his ID "Mayguy", with no care as to if what he posts is true or not.

Very stylish, quite, Energy Star unit.
