Author's Review
Several months ago, we found ourselves in need of a new phone after our old one died. On a whim, my husband came home with a brand new GE 2.4Ghz Cordless Phone. Yes, we do still have a land-line phone in our house since we only have one cell phone active at this time. Plus we need a phone number that sales people can use to harass us on instead of the cell number.
Plain and simple phone
We weren't looking for anything fancy, just a cordless phone that would work well. I believe he paid around $30 for it and that's basically what it is, a cheap phone that does the job. Measuring around 8" total the handset is a lightweight plastic, which makes it weightless while in use, but also gives it a delicate almost cheap feel. The entire unit consists of a lightweight hand set, a compact base and the cord. Just plug in the necessary wires and let it charge for a few hours and youre ready to go.
Hello? Oh yes, Now I hear you
As a 2.4 GHz phone, the clarity of the unit is very good. We have been able to walk all around our old, two story house with absolutely no static on the line. Since we bought the phone in the winter time, I have not had a chance to test out how far from the base our GE phone will last, but with the clarity I have seen so far, I would expect it to reach at least a few houses down a needed. I have also never experienced any interference with other phones, or baby monitors.
Even Cheap Phones have Features
Features of the phone include caller ID (up to 40 calls), handset locater (very helpful with a toddler, or pregnant lady in the house), an LCD display, selectable ring tones and speed dial.
Due to the sales people I mentioned earlier, Caller ID was a must have. This particular phone also features call waiting call ID - who wants to be interrupted with a solicitation call while talking to their honey. There are also times when the phone rings and we simply cannot get to the phone, such as playing with trains is more important than answering the phone. Phone numbers and names display clearly on the screen.
The small display screen is a nice bright green LCD, on which the numbers display very nicely. While searching through the Caller ID there are three different visualization modes - 7 digits, for local calls, 10 digits and 11 digits. These modes help when you want to call someone back directly using the caller ID instead of having to write the number down, which we had to do with our old phone. One thing I do not like about the display is there is only a blank screen when it is not in use (in call or searching calls), no time/date shown.
There are a 3-4 ring tones to choose from that are easily selected with the push of a button. These are fairly typical ringing sounds... i.e. you won't find your favorite song loaded in here.
Then of course you can program phone numbers for speed dial, but this isn't something I have ever used since I just tend to use the caller ID menu instead.
Other Usage
The volume of the ringer adjustable, though we usually keep ours off since this particular phone resides upstairs within earshot of my son's room. The ear piece volume is also easily adjustable while in call, so you can make sure you can hear the other person well. The only adjustment I haven't been able to figure out is the volume of the key pad. The battery keeps a good charge as we have had it sit off the base for a day or two with no problems.
Thoughts and Conversations
As an inexpensive phone, the GE 2.4 Ghz Phone is available in either white or black. I personally really like the black styling as it has an understated look to it. The phone and base takes up little space on a desk or can also be mounted by the base. And the best part... it works well and has a very clear display.
