Author's Review
I had a 2003 Chevy Astro Van, while nice, was not what i wanted to drive over the next few years. I had to buy it in a huge hurry and wished i had been able to get something else. So i set out car shopping and much by accident i found my 05 Focus at a local Audi dealer for an awesome price. After a few days, i can say i really like the car and for the budget i had, its a great car. The 05 Focus was Ford's first attempt at a re-tooling of the car. They changed the front grille, changed the badging, updated the wheel covers (and wheels), re-did the dashboard and door panels, and a few other minor touches. I think overall they spruced up the car and made it look better. Mine has the basic "Sport" package on it with 15" alloy wheels which look nice, but i do wish they where the 16" wheels. The perl gray paint is also quite stylish. Mine Focus has the 2.0 DOCH 4 cyl. mated to a 4-speed automatic. It has good power and can get up and go even with the a/c going full steam. It is a little noisy, but not terrible, i think Ford lessened the sound dampening for 2005, but i could be wrong. The four speed automatic has an overdrive on/off switch which is very handy, and it shifts very smoothly. I averaged 31 mpg's on my first tank, but thats with heavy use of the cruise control. I am hoping for an average of 25-26 mpg's, will update once i have a better idea. The steering is quite firm and very sporty. The car seems to hold its own on the road, and can zip in and out of traffic with ease. Driving on the interstate also proves no challange for the Focus and it doesn't get affected by cross winds that bad. My focus doesn't have ABS, but it brakes very well, stopping in about 130 ft. on dry pavement. The ride is decent, some rough patches upset the car on the interstate, but not badly.
The standard MP3/CD player is very nice and works well and sounds decent for a stock stereo, my focus also has the steering wheel audio controls. The A/C works well in the heat, but i wish the fan was quieter. The controls are well thought out and very easy to use and manipulate. With a few exceptions: The trunk relese button is hidden behind the turn signal stalk. The turn signals them selves are annoying and so is the seat belt reminder. The cup holders work well, but are a tad too low. Also the doors feel abit tinny and hollow. The seats are nice and have a good amount of comfort, but could use some lumbar support. Plus the height adjustment is wonderful for a car in this price range. So is the optional tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The back seat is very roomy and comfortable from what i can tell, but i only sat back there once. The trunk is of a good size, but a high lift over doesn't help, nor does the small opening.
All in all this is a good small car
