Finding out that this movie was actually funny
Date of Review: Sep 24, 2004
The Bottom Line: Watch it.
Pixar Studios has given us some masterpieces. Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and now Finding Nemo. I don't think Finding Nemo was as good as those other two, but it was still worth the money and very funny.
The movie starts out with a clownfish named Marlin (voiced excellently by Albert Brooks) showing his wife Coral (Elizabeth Perkins) their new home. They have hundreds of eggs. Coral, however, is worried about their new house, because it is right next to a dropoff. Sharks hang out around dropoffs, and then, sure enough, a shark comes and eats Coral, and all the eggs except one.
The movie then goes to the remaining egg's (who is now a child) first day of school. This is the scene where you can see how overprotective Marlin is, because of the loss of his wife and the rest of the eggs. He is always worried that something will happen to Nemo (the child fish) like him getting eaten by a shark, or him getting lost, or something like that.
So, it is the child's first day of school, and he is all excited. However, Marlin makes him be so careful on the way to school, that it spoils some of his fun.
When they get to school, one of my favorite scenes occurs. Parents of other fish keep on asking Marlin to make them laugh (because he's a clownfish) and Marlin is making really horrible jokes and it is hysterical to watch him make one.
Anyways, Nemo is mad because all the other fish are teasing him for having such an overprotective father. To show him that he is tough, Nemo swims out to the dropoff. He then gets caught by a scuba diver.
Marlin freaks out. This is where he begins his journey to find Nemo. He meets up with Dory (a hysterical purple fish with short-term memory loss.) He also meets other characters such as Bruce the vegetarian shark and Crash the sea turtle.
Meanwhile, Nemo has been sent to a dentist's office. He is living in a fishtank with Peach the starfish, Gill the angel fish, Jacques the French fish, and many others.
Ellen McGeneres did a great job as Dory. She did terrific at pretending that she couldn't remember anything after a minute. She turned in the best performance in my epinion.
Albert Brooks shined again. He talks with such emotions, but yet he manages to keep it real. He really did actually seem like he had lost his living relation. If I only heard him speaking, and hadn't seen anything, I would really believe that he had lost his son.
Pixar is just amazing with their animation. They make it look so real and life-like. It's really amazing.
This movie wasn't as good as Shrek 2, but it wasn't as bad as Monsters Inc. It is definitely worth your time and money. This movie has proved that animated movies aren't always good-natured kid friendly movies. This movie was actually a bit depressing, and really sad. You start to feel really bad for Marlin.
