A Journey into Love and Weight Loss

Date of Review: Feb 23, 2007

The Bottom Line:  I recommend this for anyone whose NEVER had weight problems. Watch it with an overweight friend. They will thank you.
A friend recommended this movie to me because I'm a fan of both Dom Deluise and Anne Bancroft and I'd never seen this movie.

In 1980 Anne Bancroft wrote and directed this touching tale of a man who fears he is one slice of bread away from death if he doesn't change his ways. Dom Deluise plays overweight Italian bachelor Dominick DiNapoli as he tries to shed a few pounds after a life of over-eatting and the funeral of a his beloved cousin Sid. Anne Bancroft plays the overly dramatic sister of Dominick, Anntoinette, who helps runs a goods shop in New York.

This darkly romantic comedy follows Deluise as he fails at one diet plan after another, BUT manages to stumble upon the woman of his dreams. Candice Azzara plays Lydia, a half-Italian, half-Polish bleach blonde shop owner from around the block.

This movie makes you laugh, it makes you cry and it seriously makes you look at what is more important in life: feeling good for the moment, or feeling good for a lifetime- a lifetime spent in the American dream.

I loved this movie. The only thing that really surprised me was the title of the movie in referrence to Dom Deluise's character. It's called "Fatso" and the entire premise of the movie is that this man is, supposedly, fat. After watching this movie and comparing it to what society today now calls "fat". Comparitively, Dom was too thin for the role at the time.

I recommend thismovie for everyone, especially people who have never had problems with their weight. This movie protrays, honestly, what it is like to try to lose weight after you've spent a lifetime using food as comfort. This movie is a wonderful eye opener and does for the audience what the movie "Supersize Me" did for today's audience, except you didn't want to vomit during the movie.
