Buyer Beware
Date of Review: Feb 21, 2007
The Bottom Line: This is not a tool for professionals. I don't think Delorme used service or delivery people for the product beta testing.
I initially purchased the Delorme 2006 GPS package in late 2005.
I use it for business, I am an emergency service electrician.
I cover the north Seattle area, so these issues are in a major city setting, which you would think would be well mapped out.
I have a laptop mounted in my work truck, with an internet air card, and printer, I have a full functioning office on wheels.
The Delorme software was so flawed, I finally gave up using it, and bought a different brand in early 2006.
Almost a year later, I got an email from Delorme, stating some of my suggestions were incorporated into the 2007 software, and was offered a discount. I had spent countless hours trying to get that program to give accurate information consistently, including at least 20 hours total either on hold, or discussing issues with tech support.
Since I had to get a 2007 map anyway, I upgraded. Within a week, remembered why I quit in the first place.
To start with, the LT-20 USB receiver is VERY temperamental. I didn't expect it to work while in a tunnel, but, a cloudy day will also keep it from getting, or keeping a 3d fix.
I could be sitting at a traffic light, loose the signal, and not get it back for up to an hour. Often, I have to break out the mapbook to do the next 1 or 2 calls. I have driven more than 30 miles before getting a new fix as well. Even then, the mapping software will direct you to go the wrong way on one way streets, turn off a freeway when there is no off ramp, send you to the 12000 block when you typed in the 300 block, or, not even find the street address you are looking for, even when the address has been valid for over 20 years.
I go to an average of 7 different addresses a day, and, in the last month, it has yet to be exactly right. I am overjoyed when it puts me within 3 blocks of the target address. I have been traveling south on a freeway, and it has tried to instruct me to take the south exit on an intersecting freeway, when there are only east-west exits available.
Anyone that has spent a good amount of time on the road knows, east/west highways are even, north south highways and freeways are odd. This is true in every state in the US. So, I feel extreme contempt when instructed to go north on a even numbered freeway. I could possibly forgive them if the exit traveled at an off angle for a few blocks, or miles, but that has not been the case.
The program is slow, often, I have to either change the view to the list option, or, just pull over, and wait for the next turn to be displayed. This is especially true in major cities, where you will have side streets less than 1 block apart, or, when exiting a freeway, and you don't know to exit left or right. I know its not the laptop, I have 1.2 gigs of ram, and perform regular maintenance. All my other programs work without problems.
I have reloaded the program, and done every "fix" listed on the Delorme site.
The bottom line is, the equipment is sub standard, and the mapping is incomplete.
They do not have a road construction update feature, so it will often send you to an area that has been closed for several months.
The support staff seems to have a script, they are not familiar with program details, and they will just repeat themselves until you finally hang up in frustration. I have managed, on occasion, to finally get connected with a person that can think for themselves, but, it took several minutes, and a couple of transfers, and even then, they could not provide answers or solutions.
Bottom line.. don't bother.
