Product Review

Dyson Animal DC07 is great for my hairy menagerie!

by   coops32 ,   Jan 8, 2007

Pros:  suction, easy to empty out debris, long cord and hose, good hairy monster attachments

Cons:  expensive, still gets hair caught in beater bar

The Bottom Line:  I honestly see no point of buying a vacuum cleaner that is not a Dyson and this is one of their better ones.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Dyson DC07 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

I love Dysons and this should be obvious by the fact that I own four at the moment (two Animals, a Root 6 handheld, and a canister) . It is a long story involving a second home as well as not wanting to lug vacuums between houses or floors, but there you have it. The resulting end is that I am lucky enough to own this DC07 and I love it! The attachments are wonderful and the suction is amazing. This vacuum is of the same great quality as my other Dysons and I know it will get the job done.

Why Dyson?

One word: suction

As I said in at least one other of my Dyson reviews, I will never quite get over the first time I used a Dyson Animal and the suction which occurred. The fact that I thought my floor had been clean and the Dyson still managed to suck up an entire compartment of junk made me ill. I now know the value in buying a Dyson and that is reliability in suction and the peace of mind in knowing that my carpets are getting clean.

Okay…..two words, really -

Second word: bagless

Bagless is big, and some of the newer bagless vacuums have good suction, but none of them hold up to my Dyson Animal. I love the fact that I just need to remove the compartment with dust and debris, then pull the trigger to dump the refuse right into the garbage. It is so much easier than those old days of trying to figure out which bags to buy and how to put them on and how to take them off without getting dust and junk all over the house (or up my nose). I must admit that I never changed the bags in my older vacuum cleaners and always waited until my parents were visiting to help me. That changed the moment I bought my first Animal five years ago and I have been sold on Dysons since.

Why the Animal?

One word: Attachments

I only have four upstairs bedrooms of wall to wall carpet as well as some throw rugs around the house. The rest of my home is mostly bamboo hardwood, so I wanted the Animal for the upstairs heavy duty rug vacuuming. My daughter has a cat that basically lives in her room all day and the fluff balls seem to fly. In addition, the puppy likes to frequent my other daughter’s room to wake her up in the morning. I have animals!!! There is fur and there are dust bunnies. I don’t want to live in a hairy house, so I wanted a vacuum with the attachments to be able to handle my menagerie!

This Dyson is loaded with the attachments I need and includes a basic crevice tool, a brush head which is really good on my daughter’s Luv Sac beanbag upholstery,a stair tool, a floor tool, and the reason for the name, the Animal turbo power tool. In addition Dyson throws in some of their specialty carpet cleaning products, but I must admit that I have never liked these. The absorbing yellowish granules called Zorb carry a smell I can’t be in the same room with, but they do tend to sop up puppy paw print dirt. Dyson’s spot removal spray is also included, but again, the smell is not the best I have dealt with. I guess it is better than some of the doggie smells we have had to deal with…. Overall, I probably use the Animal turbo brush tool and the crevice tool the most for my purposes. They are really great for getting up the animal hair and the little crumbs left around in the corners.

The HEPA filter is washable and does not have to be replaced. It has the ability to trap bacteria and allergens in it so that they don’t fly right back into the room in the air. Washing it is easy and only requires a rinse, but it is very important that the filter dries completely before you put it back in. This usually takes about a day here. If you have the need to use it sooner, you can buy an extra filter as an alternate to use while the other is drying, but washing it is not necessary except every four to six months depending on use.

Some of the Stats -

- Purple
- Two year warranty
- 35 foot cord
- 12 amp motor
- 17 foot hose which telescopes out from the body a bit

Other -

As I stated above, I use my Animal on the upper level and the bedrooms are carpeted. The landing outside the bedrooms, however, is hardwood. Luckily, this Animal does have a hardwood floor setting. The beater bar stops spinning and the vacuum sucks up all of the debris and dust bunnies. It is incredibly effective on the hardwoods!

What I like -

- The Animal turbo attachment
- Good strong suction
- No need to buy filters or bags
- Long reach (one plug in for major part of upstairs)
- Easy emptying refuse compartment
- Fairly lightweight at around twenty pounds
- Goes easily between hardwood and carpet (control switch)

What I don’t like -

- Price was a bit painful the first time and still a bit high
- Still get hair stuck around beater bar and have to cut it out
- Doesn’t do well on heavy shag (I have a really high pile area rug and have to take it in to get cleaned because the Dyson does not work well on it)

Lastly,

I obviously recommend the Dyson Animal DC07 – I own two Animals and have been thrilled with them all around. Some people see them and think they are the ugliest things on the market, but I find them attractive and I love the styling and performance of this purple wonder! It has sucked up a lot more grime than I ever wanted to know was in my carpets over the years and that is why I don’t have a problem forking out the five hundred dollars. It is worth it to have a vacuum cleaner that I do not have to deal with the hassle of bags and that actually sucks on top of it!!!! Suction is phenomenal with a Dyson and this Animal is great for dealing with hairy dust bunnies from all the creatures in my house. It is durable and I expect to use it for many more years!
