Author's Review
Some of the old school Doctor Who fans have had some pretty scathing things to say about the more recent series of the show. I'll be the first to admit I have never seen any episodes of Doctor Who pre Christopher Ecclestone,I'm so glad I gave it a shot though as it's now my favourite show in the world! Each episode seems to be more exciting than the last and season 3 doesn't disappoint.
The first episode is brilliantly written,Martha, an ambitious medical student, long suffering at the hand of her rowing family is approached on the street by a stranger taking his tie off "like so".
She gets into the hospital to find the same stranger lying in bed as her first patient. The look on the pairs faces when she listens to his two hearts is priceless.
Apart from that all seems normal until it starts raining upwards, the whole hospital is suddenly transported to the moon.
Whilst everyone around her is panicking,Martha manages to keep her calm, this impresses the Doctor and he asks if she wants to come with him to see what's going on. She refuses to call him doctor though, she says you have to earn that title.
The pair battle through Rhino like creatures called Judoon murdering motorbikers and a blood sucking alien disguised as a sweet little old lady.
The bond between the two characters isn't as instant as it was with Ecclestone and Piper, the Doctor sometimes gets a bit impatient because he has to start from scratch.
They do have some amazing adventures though
*THE SHAKESPEARE CODE
The pair meet William Shakespeare and discover the true depth of his talent after battling Witches!
*GRIDLOCK
Back to New New York where something strange lurks underneath the traffic of the city. The Doctor meets up with his very old friend the face of Boe.
*DALEKS IN MANHATTAN
The pair meet up with the Doctors oldest and most feared enemy the Daleks.
*EVOLUTION OF THE DALEKS
The next frightening stage of the Daleks madness.A half Human half Dalek creation.
*THE LAZARUS EXPERIMENT
A scientist thinks he has the secret to a prolonged life, but what will it cost him?
*42
What is causing one of the crew members of a space mission to turn on the others, the secret lies in the sun.
*HUMAN NATURE.
The Doctor has to hide his identity for a while, even from himself.
THE FAMILY OF BLOOD.
Will the Doctor remember who he is in time to save an entire village?
*BLINK
Statues that hide a dark past and will hide you in your past.
*UTOPIA
Captain Jack's back! The trio travel further than anyone has ever gone and they find the human race in a desperate search for utopia in order to escape the future kind,a race that feeds on humans.
*THE SOUND OF DRUMS
The Doctor discovers a life changing secret.
THE LAST OF THE TIME LORDS.
The Doctor must stop the Master from waging inter-galactic warfare and destroying the Earth.
*TIME CRASH.
A short production made for Children in need, the Doctor meets a blast from the past,Himself!
*VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED
The Tardis crashes into the Titanic! Also starring Kylie Minogue
There are some wonderful extras including David Tenant's video diaries, a tour of the production offices with Freema Agyeman, out takes and a wonderful feature on the music of Doctor Who including footage from a concert where things like Daleks,Cybermen and all sorts take on the 2000 strong audience.
And of course Doctor Who Confidential which features interviews with the cast and crew, how the monsters are made and all the sets and locations.
Whilst the pairs relationship is similar in some ways to Rose and the Doctors,Martha refuses to get too close as she knows that it can't end the way she wants it to.
Even I have to admit that the pining that both of them did got a bit annoying.
Aside from that,it's amazing the acting is first rate,Tenant is fabulous as the crazy, funny, quirky but a bit sinister Doctor, and Freema is great as the level headed Martha Jones.
The direction is inspired and the special effects are incredible and they get better and better as the show goes on,the effects for season 4 are absolutely mind blowing!
If you're an old school Doctor fan, give this a chance, you may be nostalgic for the tin can Dalek days but it's still the same show just a bit more futuristic,as the Doctor should be.
If you liked seasons 1 and 2 and you're a bit wary of a new companion,so was I, trust me Freema Agyeman is up to the task.
