Goo Goo Dolls - Version 6.0

Date of Review: Dec 3, 2000

This album is the Goo Goo Dolls' sixth album. The sounds on this album differ from their previous album, A Boy Named Goo. Throughout the years the band has gotten a lot of slack for changing their sound. Personally I think they are just expanding their range and showing the world that they can do different styles - and do them extremely well! Dizzy Up the Girl is one of my all-time favorite albums. I like the majority of the songs on it, and can just let it play all the way through.

The tracks include:
1. Dizzy ?
?Everything you are/Falls from the sky like a star/Everything you are/Whatever you want?
This is a very energetic song. It?s really great for when you?re driving down the highway or interstate. I think it?s a good song to begin the album with.

2. Slide -
?I wanna wake up where you are/I won?t say anything at all/So why don?t you slide?
This is the first single from ?Dizzy Up The Girl.? This is another pretty energetic song. Makes you want to sing along with it. Listen closely throughout for some great guitar!

3. Broadway ?
?Broadway is dark tonight/A little bit weaker than you used to be/Broadway is dark tonight/See the young man sitting/In the old man?s bar/Waiting for his turn to die?
More great guitar! This is a really good song - if you like ?Slide? you?ll probably like this one. This song was released as a single also.

4. January Friend ?
?Let?s pretend/My January friend/I?m wantin? you again/I wanna touch you/Every single heart that beats pretend/My January friend?
This is a song by Robby. I tend to like John?s songs better. This is pretty good though ? I?ll usually listen to it. Robby still has a lot of their old (heavier) sounds.

5. Black Balloon ?
?Comin? down the world turned over/And angels fall without you there/And I go on as your get colder/Or are you someone?s prayer?
This songs slows things down. It?s one of my favorite Goo Goo Dolls songs. This song has a lot of good guitar, too. It was another of the Goo?s released songs from ?Dizzy up the Girl.?

6. Bullet Proof ?
?Would you come my way/Or did you burn out to the end/Would you come my way/Should have listened when you called my name?
At the beginning you?re kinda waiting for something ? you mainly hear drums and a pattern of guitar. It?s a good song ? another one that?s great while driving.

7. Amigone ?
?Are you alive/Amigone/?Miracles gone wrong/Is it too late to call and tell you to be strong?
Another Robby song ? it?s okay too, although I like ?January Friend? better. Constant drum pattern in the background ? makes it pretty energy-filled. Sounds like a kinda ?hyper? song because of the drums.

8. All Eyes on Me ?
?And it won?t take long to burn/Through the nothing that you?ve learned/And the things you choose to be/All eyes on me?
I like this? It?s not slow, but not exactly fast. Good music throughout the song.

9. Full Forever ?
?Why can?t the moon stay full forever/Wednesday?s bad, but Friday ain?t much better/?Someone?s hell?
This is another song by Robby. It?s pretty good ? I like it ? don?t skip it!

10. Acoustic #3 ?
?They painted up your secrets/With the lies they told to you/And the least they ever gave you/Was the most you ever knew?
This is another one of my favorites on the CD! This is a song that John Rzenik plays (guitar) and sings alone. It is obviously (according to the title) an acoustic song. It is shorter than most others though, at only 1 minute, 56 seconds.

11. Iris ?
?And I don?t want the world to see me/?Cause I don?t think that they?d understand/When everything?s made to be broken/I just want you to know who I am?
Written for ?City of Angels?, it is the song sparked the writing for the Goo?s sixth album. This is a great song ? lyrically and musically. Listen for the guitar ? there are some great parts!

12. Extra Pale ?
?Should have known it from the start/I should have known that it was/Just another sequel/Just another reason for you?
This is the fourth, and final Robby song on ?Dizzy up the Girl.? It?s okay ? I usually listen to it.

13. Hate this Place ?
?Gone away/Who knows where you been/You take all your lies/And wish them away?
This is the last song on the CD. Pretty good ? fits in good with the rest of the CD. It?s a good song to end with too. Don?t take out the CD without listening to this one.

If you like Iris, Slide, and Black Balloon, those are enough reasons for you to get this album.. but I can tell you that you'll like more than just those three songs! To me this album has some of the same sounds as their third album, Superstar Car Wash (I've reviewed that album also). I would recommend getting Dizzy up the Girl first, then Superstar Car Wash. I would save A Boy Named Goo for third unless you like the Goo's heavier/punk sound. Their other three albums, Jed, Hold me Up, and Goo Goo Dolls (self-titled) all have the Goo's earlier sound.

I definitely recommend Dizzy Up the Girl... get this album and get "Dizzy"!

Pros
Great Sound, Displays their all around talent
Cons
People bash them for "changing" their style -- to me it's just growing!
