Author's Review
I remember getting Dimetapp Children's Dm Cold & Cough Elixir in a 4 oz. bottle at Target, but cant remember what I paid for it. It comes in a white box with a dark burgundy label and it is for kids ages 2 and up and it is grape flavored.
This stuff relieves nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, coughing and sneezing. Its active ingredient is brompheniraine maleate USP 1mg, dextromethorpan HBr, USP 5 mg, and Phenylephridrine HCI, USP, 2.5mg. Other ingredients include artificial flavor, citric acid, FD&C blue no. 1, FD&C red no. 40, glycerin, propylene glycol, purified water, sodium benzonate, sodium citrate, sorbitol, and surcralose.
Some warnings:
Ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease; high blood pressure; thyroid disease; diabetes; trouble urinating due to enlarged prostate gland; glaucoma; cough that occurs with too much phlegm (mucus); a breathing problem or persistent or chronic cough.
Dosage instructions:
For children under age 2, this is not for you.
Kids ages 2 to under 6- consult a doctor
Ages 6 -12 two tsp every 4 hours
Ages 12 and up- 4 tsp. every 4 hours
This liquid is purple in color and smells really, really sappy sweet, but my oldest has no trouble taking it and likes the taste. As for how long it takes to take effect, I find it can take about a half hour to kick in, and lasts about 4-6 hours.
One thing I noticed as a side effect of this, but its not listed on the bottle is that this liquid seems to make my oldest a little chatty and a little hyper. Perhaps its the sugar in this, but this is not something I would suggest taking before trying to get your kid to bed, because she seemed to be a little over excited after taking this.
But, if you have a kid that has a cough and a runny nose, this is nice to have rather than taking two other separate medicines for two different symptoms, but overall, I would have to rate this an average- there are so many more choices out there other than this, and I find that this particular one makes my kid a little too over excited. Although this does clear up symptoms for 4-6 hours, I find the side effect not worth the results.
