Better than Armageddon!

I feel that the only reason Deep Impact did not become a big blockbuster success is the fact that Armageddon came out right after it and the publicity for Armageddon was far greater than that of Deep Impact. Instead of reviewing Deep Impact I would rather just say why I thought it was better than Armageddon.

1. Unlike Armageddon, there really was a huge destruction scene in the end! Yes, Armageddon showed Grand Central Station blow up and the Eiffel Tower fall but it did not show mass destruction to the extreme that Deep Impact did. During Armageddon, there was such a buildup for a good destruction scene and then nothing happens. Bruce Willis saves the day. It was such a let down.

2. I feel Armageddon was blinded by too much Hollywood-esque actors such as Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck. Although Deep Impact starred Morgan Freeman and Robert Duvall they are not big blockbuster actors. Everyone agrees that they are well established and they have much respect but they don't fill a theater the way Bruce Willis does. Using more serious actors like Freeman and Duvall made Deep Impact all the more realistic.

3. Deep Impact surrounded its plot with the actual destruction and feared devastation of the United States. Armageddon had too many subplots having nothing to do with the movie. I did not particularly care for the Ben Affleck, Bruce Willis and Liv Tyler soap opera having to do with the relationship between Tyler and Affleck. It had no purpose for the movie. It just built up for more sentimental emotion for the end. Yes, all the teen girls cry towards the end of the movie but I did not. I wanted to see action. I wanted a mass explosion. This movie lacked that and focused more on subplotting.

4. In Armageddon, a good portion of the movie was devoted to space travel whereas in Deep Impact there was a blend of space travel and what was happening back on Earth. The space scenes seemed a little boring in both. That is why I appreciated Deep Impact more for not using up too much time floating in outer space.

5. Again, because of Armageddon's all star cast, the movie seemed too glamourous and not that realistic. Picturing Bruce Willis as an astronaut is as funny as the script for the movie. None of the characters really understood that they were very close to dying. No one seemed to notice. Everyone went on with their soap opera lives worrying about what seems to be minute problems at a time such as that. In Deep Impact, you can feel the emotion and the outright terror that the huge rock in the sky caused. The movie scared the crap out of me. I could honestly say that I did not sleep that night.

This is just the way I feel about these two movies. I do not think they should be classified as the same. Anytime I ask someone which is their favorite they name Armageddon. They said it made them cry. This really irritates me. I will admit that I did like Armageddon. It just was not your typical disaster movie. It was more of a drama then an action flick.
