an unbiased resource

Date of Review: Feb 17, 2000

we've subscribed to consumer reports for years, and always consult back issues before we buy anything. i have no experience with other consumer magazines, but i've heard consumer reports is the only one that doesn't accept advertising. i can't imagine such a magazine accepting advertising and still maintaining its objectivity.

consumer reports' critiques, especially of cars, tend to be very nit picky. they point out the tiniest little flaws, things which i often couldn't care less about. but i'm glad they're written that way. i'd rather have the information and not use it, than not have it in the first place.

one drawback is that by the time an article appears, the models reviewed often are obsolete or have been replaced. this happened recently when i researched coffee makers. out of probably a dozen models, maybe two were available at the stores where i looked.

all in all, though, i think consumer reports provides a valuable service not available elsewhere.
