ChuChu Rocket!: Addiction redifined
Date of Review: Mar 11, 2000
When looking from the outside in ChuChu Rocket! doesn't look too impressive...but after playing it, you'll find that not many games have ever been quite as addicting as this.
The game was developed by Sega's infamous Sonic Team. Sonic Team is Sega's hotshots. They are the men behind Sonic and Phantasy Star among others. You would expect for their second Dreamcast game, they would attempt to break the graphical barriers, instead they have decided to break the ice on network play.
ChuChu Rocket is in fact Sega's first multiplayer online experience. Through the disc (which can be found for as low as $29.99) you can find chat rooms, games against up to three other players. You can talk trash (or type for that matter), research codes, etc. For this alone ChuChu is worth it's price. The ability to play people across America in the most addictive game since Tetris, is an incredible joy.
The graphics are simple. A flat board with somewhat 3D ChuChus. ChuChus are in fact little space mice, your mission is to guide the ChuChus using your Dreamcast controller by placing numerous directional arrows in hopes to lead them into their own ChuChu Rocket. Makes no sense does it? In the mean time the KapuKapus (space cats) are out to kill the ChuChus. Yes this game definately has a Far East feel to it, but it translates world wide into fun!
There are several modes of gameplay.
-Four player battle mode: A personal favorite of mine, get four friends, four controllers and have a blast. Thousands of ChuChus run out, it is your job to guide them into your rocket all while avoiding KapuKapus and at times blocking your opponents. If you and your friends get into this four-player mode expect some sleepless nights.
-Team Battle mode: Much like the Four player battle mode, except that you have a partner.
-Challenge mode: a lot of fun as well. The game will give you different challenges and it is up to you to do it, fun but not quite as fun as puzzle mode.
-Puzzle mode: my one player baby, it sooo much fun. You have to figure out what combination of arrows will get your ChuChus into their rocket, very addicting.
Now take all these single modes, add in online gameplay, cheap price, and you have one of the best Dreamcast games YET! Although at this point the description of the game (if you have not seen it in action yet) may sound a bit strange, I assure you once you get the hang of it you will be spending way more time then you should on your Sega Dreamcast.
WARNING: Highly addictive, and you need quick reflexes and a quick mind to be good at multiplayer modes (that must be why I'm so good at it =)
