WHAT'S THE 411 ON THIS PRODUCT?
I used to have to boil water on the stove in a small or medium-size pot and it would seem like forever and a day for the water to boil! I was always told that a watched pot never boils. And that is seemingly true!
In the past, I've always had to boil water on the stove or in the microwave for lots of things - to get enough hot water for melting chocolate, blanching small amounts of veggies or fruits for freezing, for a cup of coffee or tea, even for hot lemonaide!
And as fast as your microwave oven is, when you want to boil enough water in a mug for a cuppa Joe, it can seem almost like eons to get it hot. and when it IS finally hot and you put some instant coffee into the mug, you've got a big mess on your hands because the mug has run over as a result of heating the water in the microwave!!
Something about the water being heated in the microave oven that causes this, so you can't really have the water boiling hot if you do.
WHAT THEN?
So I was visiting a forum on the Web and one of the members there began a thread asking if anyone owns an electric water heating kettle. This had sparked my interest in looking into getting one! I began searching the Web for what I thought would be a very good one to own.
Then yesterday, I decided to go over to one of the Bed Bath & Beyond stores in the Boston area to take a look at what they had. I found a few and looked them over as follows;
1. Rival:
This one is the cheapest model there. It is made of plastic and is a lot on the small side. The heating plate is in direct contact with the water, which means that mineral and calcium deposits can build up right on the heating plate.
It has no water guage, no indicator light to show that it's operating and there is no protection to prevent the unit from boiling dry - possibly paving the way for a potential fire hazard! No automatic shut off either!! Also, it's not cordless.
It only costs $12.00, so It's like, well, you get what you pay for.
2. Krups:
This one was looking quite impressive! It's availible in two colors - black and white, has a large capacity and a water guage as well as
an indicator light to let you know that the unit is operating and is cordless.
But I continued to look some more.
3. Chef's Choice:
Then I looked at the Chef's Choice Model 677 Corrdless Electric Kettle. I was beginning to warm up to this one. As I examind it even more, I noticed that it IS cordless, has an indicator light to show that the unit is on and operating, has a water guage and that the water heater is UNDER AND JUST OUTSIDE the compartment where the hater is heated!
The water compartment is made of pure stainless steel. To me, it is one of the better models there!
WHAT ELSE?
So I bought the unit took it home set it up and tried it out by heating some water for a mug of coffee. I found out that it heats and boils the water super fast! That it is very convenien in that it sits on a power base that translates electric current to the kettle itself!
Filling the kettle with enough cold water for a fast heating and boiling cycle, after which I turned the unit on, went to do something else and when I returned, I found out that the water had already got hot and boiled and the unit had turned itself off!! Just in that short amount of time!
USES:
You can use this unit for heating water to take care of small cooking tasks that require small to medium amounts of hot water for such things as melting chcolate, blanching small amounts of veggies and fruits for freezing, instant hot cereals, hott chocolate, coffee, couscouse, instant soups with noodles, intant gravy mixes, intant bullion broth, jello deserts, instant grits and more. The possibilities are endless!!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
After setting the unit's base up, plugging it into a live outlet, filling the kettle with enough cold water to reach one of the marked levels on the guage, the kettle then being placed and seated properly on the power base and the unit turned on, the water will begin to heat up and boil.
Shortly afterwards, the unit will shut off once the water has boiled. The hot water will then be ready to use for whatever you need it for!
HOW TO USE:
Just follow the procedures above for setting up and using the unit. When you are ready, just turn on unit by depressing the lever just under the kettle's handle. The indicator light will come on, signifying the the unit is on and is receiving power.
Shortly after the waters boils, the heating cycle is over and the unit will automatically turn off of its own accord and the light will go out. Your hot water is then ready for use. If the kettle was full or almost full and you didn't need all of the water that's in it but you'd like another cup of hot water later for coffee or tea, just press the power lever down again, aan the same cycle will repeat itself.
You can do this over and over and over again, as long as there is enough water in the kettle! This feature helps keep the unit from boiling the water too long, but only just enough to allow you to get the amount of hot water that you need.
