Product Review

Beware of Expensive Replacement Parts

by   bamatt ,   Jun 13, 2004

Pros:  ease of set up, 3 independent burners

Cons:  flair-ups, uneven heat distribution, durability, expensive replacement parts

The Bottom Line:  Constant flair-ups. poor durability, & extremely costly replacement parts make this a grill to avoid at all costs.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this grill after reading all the wonderful reviews. The model I own has 3 interior burners but no side burner.

Maybe I got a lemon, but this is the worst grill I have ever owned.

The only positives are that the grill was easy to assemble & it is attractive looking.

The grill advertises stainless steel tents over the burners which prevent flair-ups. They do not work, I have found flare-ups to be constant & horrible. I like to cook a steak to a medium rare doneness. On a "medium" heat setting the steak will be severely charred before it reaches a medium rare state. If I turn the burner down low enough to prevent the flair-ups, the steak will take 2 hours to cook. The only way to cook a steak properly is the sear it on the grate & then finish cooking it on the upper vegetable warming rack.

Also the grill was shipped with a cheap grate so I had to immediately invest $25 for a decent replacement.

After one year of ownership my regulator valve began to leak. I went to the Charbroil website to buy a replacement & was astonished at the cost of a replacement.

Are you ready??? $65.

This grill will not accept the universal valve regulators that sell at Home Depot for $16.99. The only difference between the $16.99 regulator & the $65 on is the end that connects it to the grill. Unless that connector is made of 24K gold or possibly platinum, I do not see how Charbroil can justify the added cost.

Since the grill cooks so horribly, I am not willing to invest another $65 in addition to the almost $300 purchase price. So basically I now have a worthless piece of scrap metal on my patio that I now need to dispose of.

I will say that I previously owned a Charbroil "Patio Caddie" & while it was small, it was one of the best grills I have ever used.

I have learned an expensive & valuable lesson from purchasing this grill:
You never know how a grill will cook until you use it. I would like to invest in a $500+ nicer grill, but after this experience I will not purchase a grill unless the manufacturer offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
