Earthquake Is The Right Name For This One

by   berniez40 , top reviewer in Musical Instruments, Sports & Outdoors at Epinions.com ,   May 6, 2008

Pros:  Loud, Clean, Power Handling, Power Transfer, Frequency Response

Cons:  Back Breakingly Heavy

The Bottom Line:  If you want ultra low frequency response in your sound, and you used to fear the harsher sounds of folded horns--fear no more. These rock!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Okay I admit that one seismic does not fit all, but this 18" folded horn is the real deal. I've been in many a situation in live music when a folded 18" was used, but the frequency response was always just a tad slow, thus giving a slightly false feel of playing just ever so slightly behind the beat. --It's a bass player thing I admit, but if you are perceived in any way shape or form as being off time, and you're the bass player--it's time to start looking for another gig. Here's what I like about these.

FREQUENCY RESPONSE

As I said earlier I like the way these things punch the sound out w/out a "Woofy" sound that makes disitinction of the beat as fuzzy as the tone. They are so clean sounding that it is almost scary. The speakers themselves, as well as the cabinet's design helps create some seriously fun sub harmonic structures that don't get too muddy in the tone department, and thus allows for some real "Earthquake Sized OOMPH" in the beat department. No buzz, no fuzz that you don't need, just bad @$$ sound w/out any bleed. Even a five string upright bass w/the sub-contra low "B" de-tuned to an earth shattering sub contra "A" comes out loud and clear. Now that's some real hefy oomph. This is the sound that sends beers rattling across the bar w/out distortion. Now how cool is that?

DURABILITY

Let's face it. Cerwin Vegas are legendary for their durability. They get whooped up on year after year, but keep coming back for more. I've worked with one band where they re-coned all their PA Speakers annually just because of the wear and tear of weekly gigging. Well, that is, except for these monsters. Brendan the band leader and head sound guy (neat combo huh) said maybe every three years for the CV's in the past, (the old SL Series) and he expects the same out of these. Hey, if my electrics and Upright sound that clean at super low frequencies on speakers that have had at least a year's worth of brutal road work on them , it is quite a testament. It's only speakers tha are that good that allow me to de-tune my bass and not sound like mud. These babies simply rock.

NOW FOR THE HARD PART

Well in order to get an 18" folded horn w/frequency responses of 30HZ-300HZ that can handle 500 watts RMS all night long, and still handle a peak at 1000 Watts, you often need to build a mega sized cabinet. This thing is no exception. At 36" High X 24" Wide X 36" Deep, this monster clocks in at 166 lbs. That's an absolute back breaker. At least inside of this behemoth of a cabinnet you get an 18" horn which has a full 3" voice coil inside. That's a great ratio, and is probably what's responsible for the cleanliness of sound. You also get the quality of Neutrik Speak On connectors which are recognized throughout the industry for their durability as well as their clean connection.
