Author's Review

Most people know me as being a beer geek. I have sought out as many kinds of beer as possible. I am also starting to develop a bit of a reputation for being an absinthe drinker. But my fondness for adult beverages is not limited to just suds and green fairies. I have been gradually trying to cultivate a taste for wine and other liquors. I am not nearly as knowledgeable on these other drinks as I am on beer but I am working on.

It's nice when I receive gifts that help me discover different drinks. Another present recently received was a bottle of Captain Morgan Tattoo. I was familiar with the regular spiced rum from Captain Morgan but I had not tried this one. I was immediately advised by the gift giver to not mix this rum. It was meant to be consumed straight so I could appreciate all the nuances.

Well, I would have to drink it straight in order to write about it anyway so that was a moot point. It did make me anxious to check it out. I figured that at least a couple glasses needed to be consumed straight up. It would be my discretion to mix it later if I so desired.

The bottle actually remained unopened for awhile because I wanted to share the first experience with a few friends. Luckily, I have no trouble rustling up 8 or 10 shot glasses when the need arises. This was the opening ceremony for a small gathering of friends. A few peoples just downed the shot proper. I opted to sip and try to pick out some flavors and nuances. There will be plenty of time to pound shots later.

For review purposes, I decided to drink a small glass alone. I poured the glass. It is a dark, sticky liquid. It has a nice brown hue. I noticed that it had a very fruity, cherry aroma. It reminded me a bit of Dr. Pepper which could be good or bad depending on your point of view. I found this to be pleasing if not overwhelming. I was not picking up a lot of spice in the nose. I was worried that the rum would be a bit too sweet.

That soda like quality came through in the flavor. I noticed it on my first sip. It has a little bit of a burn in the finish but it is minimal. This is not a heavy duty liquor. The flavor is a tad on the sweet side but manages to avoid being too syrupy or cloying.

Some spices do come through in the flavor if one sips the rum patiently. I was having a hard time placing my finger on it but it made for an enjoyable drink. This is a good rum for sipping. One will not need to make a rum and coke as the cola flavor is already present.

Captain Morgan Tattoo weighs in at 70 proof so it is a little lower than most whiskeys and vodkas. That makes it a better choice for those who wish to be more moderate in their consumption. I found this to have a really nice flavor. It is a good rum to simply pour a little into a snifter and enjoy. It has minimal burn. There is a bit of a stickiness in the finish but it does not leave a harsh aftertaste.

I am sure that this will do very well with many drinkers. It is sweet and does not leave the harsh aftertaste of many rums. I recommend it because I think that a lot of people will enjoy it. I think it could be mixed well with orange juice but mixing it with coke might be a bit redundant. This is a nice addition to my liquor roster.
