Author's Review
I bought this lens for use on my Canon Rebel XT. I wanted a good travel lens - so I didn't have to lug a million lenses with me on vacation. I tried it out for a couple of weeks, and just wasn't terribly impressed. I am not a professional by any means, and I do not any L lenses to compare it with, so this is merely the review of an amateur who likes to take photos of her children. Honestly, I got better shots with my 18-55mm kit lens.
Some of the biggest problems:
1.The photos it produced were extremely soft, and not just on the long end, although images came out the least sharp at about 100mm and beyond. I realize that such is the nature of super zooms, but this lens is an extreme in this regard.
2. Indoors, this lens was terrible. The autofocus was slow, and constantly searching, even when there was (what I thought) adequate lighting. And even with a flash, I just didn't get great pictures.
One good point: outdoors in bright light, and even overcast, this lens took fairly nice photos - not great, but nice.
In the end, I noticed a flaw on the lens as well that was producing shadows on all my images, so I took it as a sign and I returned it after about 10 days. I got the Canon 28-135 USM IS, and I like it very, very much. The images are sharper, the focus is faster, and the IS is really nice to have, especially for school plays, etc.
All in all, if you're looking for a good lens for travel, skip the 28-200, and spend the extra on the 28-135.
