Author's Review
First of all, I did some trial and error, then a lot of research before I brought my Braun 5790 and it is the clear winner because of value, value, value. I work hard and like value for my money. One of the reasons I went with electrics in the first place was to save money over buying replacement heads and cream etc.
I had a Braun before this that I used for around 9 years and after that a norelco [phillishave it seems in canada]for 5. Both shavers gave great long term service but it was time for a change. I first off just picked up a midrange cordless norelco from my local wal mart but just wasn't happy with it. In a sentence the performance wasn't noticeably better than my 5 year old norelco [with old blades!] and everything about it was cheap. It felt cheap, it looked cheap, it was not exactly cheap to buy. Returned it, thanks wal mart.
Did the homework on all the Brauns, bought the 5790 and here's why; The optimum recommended replacement of the foil head/cutters on it is every 18 months, compared to higher end brauns [like 7526,7580,7570 etc]that require replacement for optimum service every 6 months...that saves you a lot of money over a 3 5 10 year period [at $25-$30 bucks for a replacement head]. You get all the same cord/cordless benefits, warranties, cleaning etc. Because it's not overly fancy-schmancy you can get replacement heads for it anywhere, thats important to me in any product. Another big benefit of the 5790 is you can clean it under water, others not recommended. This can save you in the long run if you dont want to buy a lot of cartridges [~$10-$15 for 2, 30 clean cycles per cartridge], dont have your cleaner with you or dont have time to clean it manually. Just a tip from other reviews for cost conscious consumers, you can refill the cartridges with rubbing alcohol instead of buying replacements but still have the benefits of auto cleaning!
Its just quality period. Right out of the box you can tell, it comes with a nice leather pouch and feels good in the hand. It's simple and practical, theres nothing on it you'll pay for and never use. The cleaning system is cool, its techie and I really like it. Bottom line, it gives me really good shaves, more options and at a better price.
