Bosch PB10-CD Radio/CD Boombox

Date of Review: Sep 25, 2008

The Bottom Line:

This is a fine tool for a job site. It offers AM/FMradio, CD and MPs. Also the convenience of battery charging power and four extra GFI outlets and more.

When on job sites one of the guys brings out the company radio. It's the Bosch PB10-CD Radio/CD Boom-box and it's a lot more than just the radio we usually use it for. It's a multi use Boom Box that is great for both work and play.

Let's Play

This radio work system is a 14" cube and isn't all that heavy at 21lbs. I haven't tossed the thing around but it's said to take workplace abuse. We don't treat ours all that hard in the environment we use it but it has worked well both inside and outside. The handle is easy to grab and the whole thing looks pretty cool to me. There was a time when I was always using a cheap radio to listen to my AM talk shows all day when working. With this I could have a good radio with good sound and not take up a usable outlet on a jib but create a few extra ones. As it is we use this radio on job sites and it's lasted well for our whole team.

This radio draws both AM and FM stations. A small rubber covered antenna on top helps get better AM reception. It has dual speakers in front that give good sound and they don't distort sound when cranked up. Though it's not the best of sound systems it is adequate on the job.

Though a CD player is part of the package, I have never used it. The CD player is said to keep dust out of the system. I would say that's particularly important on work sites. On the front end is a standard 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack for MP3 players. I have hooked my iPod into it and the sound was pretty good because the preset equalizer system. By pushing a particular button marked Bosch Soundthe volume picks up in a well balanced form keeping the bass full and the higher notes rich sounding. Separate bass and treble controls adds to better sound too.

On the fun end I also like that the box has a cigarette 12v type opening for charging a cell phone.

Workplace Features

There are a number of things that make this fit for the work-site. First the whole thing is mounted inside a frame of steel and hard plastic corners keeping the radio from getting bumped by on the job tools and such. The mounting also keeps the main box almost two inches off the ground so water issues are not quite as big a problem. That little extra height also helps keep dust out too.

I like that this unit plugs into any outlet but then can be set up as a power source of its own. On the back are four outlets that can be used for power tools and such. They have a built in GFCi system for more safety. That's pretty cool if you ask me. Those plugs can also be used for charging cell phones too.

The radio and outlets can also give power from a Bosch portable battery if not near a power source. What is cool s that there's a chamber where that battery can be stored or plugged in. The charger can give power when away from a power source and then regain power when near one and plugged in. That chamber for the batteries is also large enough to hold a few CDs.

Pops Last Thoughts

This system is not that big or heavy as a 14" cube and weighs a little over twenty pounds. It combines play features on the work-site along with practical benefits of extra power, a system that is bump, drop and dust resistant along with being able to work with or without an external power source. The radio sounds good and though we have had this radio well over a year, it continues to work well and looking good.
