Author's Review
Gary Larson has and always will be a brilliant artist that knew/knows exactly how to turn a phrase to make it funny. He has made a living off of spinning situations where you wouldn't think there would be humor into some of the funniest caricatures that you will ever see. His humor is unique in its presentation, and if you have enjoyed one of his comics, it's a sure bet that you will enjoy most of entire collection. Over the years he has compiled a number of books that depicted the comic strips that he published in famous newspapers everywhere. As the years passed, his collection of comics grew, and every time he had enough new comic strips he put them into books. Once the books had been on the market, he then started making Galleries of the work, like this one, that showcases several books at once.
The Far Side Gallery 3 is a large coffee-table-ready book that compiles three of his former best-selling books into one collection that is bigger and better than the original release. This one, the third gallery that Larson and company put together, combines his books Hound of the Far Side, The Far Side Observer and Night of the Crash Test Dummies. The positive to being able to purchase the gallery rather than the separate books is that you have all of the cartoons in one large (and easily presented) book that can be funny for the purchaser for quite a while, and can double as a great conversation piece on the corner of a coffee table. Either way, this book is bound to provide an intense amount of humor that will keep its readers laughing for hours.
For those unfamiliar with some of Larson's work, I will do my best to describe some of the comics that he has included in this gallery. One of the comics depicts two people in a bomb shelter, as we see both inside the shelter and bombs going off above ground. Surrounding the two characters, most likely a man and wife, are what appears to be hundreds of canned goods. The caption reads "How many times did I say it, Harold? How many times? Make sure that bomb shelter's got a can opener -- ain't much good without a can opener, I said!" Some of his comics take a little thought in order to find the humor, but once you realize exactly what is going on, it is hard to stop the laughing or the smiling. Many of his comics are like that, and when you have a Gallery combining three of his great books, you are bound to have hours of enjoyment at your finger-tips.
This is a really cool book to have around the house or the office, and it is one that you can pick up for a few minutes, and put back down to take another look later on. Due to this, the book really has a long shelf-life for those that enjoy the humor, and there are times when I go back days, months, years later and still find immense humor within the words and comics of Gary Larson. Though this compilation of three books is quite interesting, and grand in presentation with some full color versions of the same comics, it doesn't present very much new material for a Larson fan. But if you are looking for something that is going to be full of laughter, this is definitely a book to purchase for yourself, or a friend that might enjoy a few laughs. Highly Recommended.
