A Childhood Favorite

I read Sounder for the first time in seventh grade and to this date it is still a book that is a love in my heart.
I bought the book for my son this pass year and he really likes it. He of course didn't understand about some of the aspects of the problems because of the difference of the growing up styles, but after explaining to him the hard times of living for "black children" in the pass, he understood a bit more. He loved the book because of the dog though and he loved the name Sounder.
This book is a tear jerker.
I truly wished that this book was still recommended for students to read in school so that more of this culture is understood when a child does go to read the older books as such.
I highly recommend for parents to buy this book for their pre-teens and possibly read it with them and to be a part of the explaining part.
