Hear My Cry: This is a Great Book!

Mildred Taylor did a fantastic job with this book. It relates the life of an African American family and the turmoil and trouble they face in Mississippi in 1933. Each character in the Logan family comes to life through Taylor's words. Each person has their own personality and characteristics.

Cassie is the strong-willed main character who shoots off at the mouth-often getting herself into trouble. She just doesn't seem to understand why her family is treated the way they are and she plans to do something about it. I think many people would relate to or really identify with Cassie.

The supporting characters are just as life-like. The reader forms a strong bond with Little Man, Cassie's younger brother. You begin to stand up for him, just like Cassie does.

The Logan's one asset is their land. They take a lot of pride in owning their own land, and when it is threatened some issues have to be dealt with. This book teaches many things: an understanding for what African Americans went through, respect for other people, and how to persevere through rough situations.

I enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to reading other books by Mildred Taylor.
