Author's Review
When I first saw the size of this book I thought I would never finish reading it, but once I started reading it my mind wandered through it like listening to a story told of a close friend. Whenever I would put the book down I always looked forward to picking it back up again. Although it is long and detailed, it is written in a wonderfully dramatic manner that states the facts, giving emotion when it is due.
The story follows the life of a man convicted of the crime of stealing bread. He spends years in jail and when he gets out skips out on his parole, and that is when the real story begins.
The main character takes on another lifestyle, while taking care of someone from his past. Although everyone believes him to be someone he is not, he is being tracked down by a police officer who has dedicated his life this hardened criminal in hiding.
Living a life on the run, the dramatics are amazing in this story. Victor Hugo shows the injustice of life and how strong emotions can run in a persons heart, especially when they don't seem to have any emotion at all. A true show of characters, the only way to describe how realistic the characters are is amazing. Not only do the characters seem as real as ourselves, they seem too real in the manner that Hugo exposes us to their deepest and darkest thoughts and feelings... things we don't even notice about ourselves. It's like looking out a window at ourselves.
This book is very long, but if you have patience, it is so much more than worth your time. This is a story that will stay with you forever.
