Author's Review
What is the Guinness Book of World Records?
OK, so youve lived under a rock your whole life, right? The Guinness Book of World Records was named after Arthur Guinness who founded the Guinness Brewery at St. James Gate in Dublin. (Yes, he made beer.) The Guinness Book of Records was first written in 1955. It was instant success and by 1984 sales passed fifty million and will reach the 100 million mark soon if hasnt already.
What is this book about?
OK, so youre probably saying, Ive read many books, whats so special about this one? The Guinness holds all the records you can think of. I am often amazed by how many records there are in this book. Who has the largest collection of Garfield memorabilia? Who has the most ballpoint pens? Who was the youngest NBA player? Person who caught on fire the most? And many, many more. Many kids have wanted to break a world record. Bobby and Cindy from The Brady Bunch tried to break the teeter-totter record, remember? Even me and my friend when we were about 10 tried to break the longest paper chain, but failed miserably after our parents told us to stop wasting paper. (The longest paper chain is over 30 miles long.)
Whats new to this edition?
The 2000 edition has many colorful photos and is a must if you dont have the 1999 edition. If you do have the 1999 edition, though, I wouldnt buy it. It has about the same records except for the ones broken like Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones. Remember them? They circumnavigated the globe by a balloon, and Maurice Greene broke the 100-meter record by .05 seconds.
But thats not enough for me. I want more.
OK, if you must have more, Guinness is on Television! It is on about 7:00 on ABC if I am not mistaken, and they have many records broke live. It is a really fun television show to watch but do be warned, the graphics are very real where they sometimes eat bugs and other creepy crawlers.
And In Conclusion..?
Well, many of the books are just repeats of old records, but sometimes I like to know the useless information. What this book was made for was debate. The author was having a fight over if the Golden Plower was Europe's fastest game bird, and they wanted the people who were in arguments to know the answer. Well what they made was a nationally known book and alot of money. Guinness, is, GENIUS!
