Symbolic Significance in Ethan From

A book that is engrossed with symbols make a novel so much more intriguing, and gives significant implied information for the reader. In the book Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton utilizes key symbols throughout the book to help reach her theme. Three of these symbols I feel have great importance in the novel and help Wharton to further explain the story in an implied fashion that makes the reader hooked on reading the book and eagerly waiting for the end.
In the book Ethan Frome, it is described that the house of the Ethan and Zenna’s is dark and gloomy and deathly dull. She ties in the dark and morbid house to the relationship of Ethan and Zenna, their relationship is very depressing and sad because they dont seem happy together. “A dead cucumber-vine dangled from the porch like the crape streamer tied to the door for a death, and the thought flashed through Ethan’s brain: “If it was there for zeena--” (Wharton, 44). The sight of the dead vines hanging off the porch of the house welcoming guest to the house is symbolic to the attitude and relationship with Ethan and Zeena. Both unhappy acting dead towards each other with blank stares of confusion.
He and Zeena had not exchanged a word after the door of
their room had closed on them....Ethan undressed hurriedely and blew out the light so that he should not see her when he
took his place at her side. (Wharton49)
When Zeena was out of the house and running her errands mattie and Ethan would have some akward moments. Another symbol og great imprtance comes up when they are in the house and they are alone together. Out of nowhere the cat jumps unto zeena’s chair and looks at the too staring into their eyes. The cats symbolic nature of zeena is important because he watches mattie and Ethan when they are alone and it shows how in a way they can not hide there feelings towads each other even when zeena is gone.
