A review of Brave New World
Date of Review: Apr 7, 2005
The Bottom Line: I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thought provoking literature. This book is for anyone that enjoyed 1984 by George Orwell.
In a Brave New World, Aldous Huxley takes us into the world of tomorrow. A world where the human race is made from test tubes. No parents, no problems, no worries. A world where good feelings are artificially induced by miracle drugs.
Brave New World is most comparable to the classic book 1984, but it poses the same questions in a completely different way.
In 1984, the people live in the slums, where every move is watched and controlled. In Brave New World the people are living in a society where love is free, and sex is shared with everyone. They have no worries, and they live in peacefulness.
Is this the ideal life to live, to be free from stress and live in harmony, or does man require conflict to be happy? Does man require an option to expand his mind, to travel great distances, to make mistakes. Does man need misery in order to appreciate happiness? With the level of government control rising, is there a possibility that similar circumstances could be in our future?
These are just some of the questions Brave New World invites readers to ponder.
While1984 is filled with propaganda that would give any sane reader negative feelings towards a controlled society, Brave New World allows the reader to come to their own conclusion by creating an entirely different environment than the one in 1984.
Brave New World is a great read and will be sure to keep it's readers entertained. It's only shortcomings was a few spots that dragged on for too long, and a few unexpected twists that could have been more cleverly thought out.
I recommend this book to anyone that enjoyed 1984, or wants a fun read that makes them question their beliefs.
