Author's Review
I bought this game because the women in my family are completely addicted to the actual-reality version. My mom keeps her Boggle-box next to the kitchen table, and when "the kids" come to visit, you can pretty much guarantee that eventually the game will be started at some point.
The only problem is that the only time we get to play together is when we're all at each other's homes. When we're home alone, we're stuck playing solo, and frankly, if you want, you can write down "MXVQS" and count it if there's nobody to challenge you on it.
Enter Boggle CD-ROM. I bought it as a double-pack with Yahtzee, which is still it the shrinkwrap. I then lost the CD. I let someone borrow it and they never returned it. I was beside myself. So I got another from eBay. Happy again!
What I like
Classic Boggle, played solo. I like that I can change the time limit.
I like being able to look up words that the computer says are there but I don't really believe exist.
I like that it tells you how well you did against the computer.
I like that you can add to the dictionary if you want.
I like that you don't have to have the CD in to play Classic. My desk is so unorganized I probably couldn't find it most of the time.
I like that you can turn off the sound and/or music. I prefer quiet when I play.
What I don't like
Multi-player games. If I have someone else to play with I'll play the actual game with the tray and the cubes and pen and paper, thanks.
The "Minimum System Requirements" are the bare minimum to get the game to run at all. The "Recommended Minimum" will make it run fairly decently. You need a bit more than that for uninterrupted flow of game.
I wish it took less time to get started. It seems to take forever. It also takes a while to quit.
It can be frustrating when it tells you how well you did against the computer. I know I said that I liked this feature. I do like it when I do well. I hate it when I do crappy. *g*
What I've never (or barely) tried
The other four varieties. I've played each one once, and none have held my interest like Classic. I should, however, give them another chance, since my trial was back when the game was new and fascinating.
Playing against someone over the 'net. I understand this is done at http://www.zone.com. I've never been there; mostly because I need to force my mother and/or sister to buy a copy of this game.
Other PC games I enjoy
The Sims (Maxis)
The NeverHood (DreamWorks)
Bicycle Games (Expert Software)
You Don't Know Jack (Berkeley)
and many more...
Bottom line
If you like word games, and especially if you enjoy the "board game" version of Boggle, this is one to try.
