Product Review

Not just the greatest RHCP album, but one of the best albums ever

by   joe-cool ,   Jun 13, 2004

Pros:  Everything about this CD is perfect

Cons:  None

The Bottom Line:  This is one of the best albums ever made. Nuff said.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Some of you out there may disagree with the following statement that this is really the best album that I've heard, and I've heard plenty. But it’s true: this album is rock in its purest form imaginable. The talent represented in this album is something that current bands can't top today. Why? I'll share my thoughts!

Good things:
The current "rock" music this day is getting worse and worse all the time. I'm sick and tired of the repetitive and bland lyrics, and boring and uninspired guitar riffs. I honestly believe that rock these days is just a bunch of chords played over and over and over, with some loser in acid washed jeans trying to be cool, moaning about breaking up with his girlfriend. Even worse, all of the songs sound the same.

This album, made in the early nineties, has none of our current day problems in rock music. Let me point out first off and first most, that the music actually contains talent! The guitar work in this song is fantastically, insanely awesome. There is enough complex rhythms and riffs in one of these songs to outlast an entire CD of music of the now. John Frusciante is absolutely amazing with his guitar work. and don’t you forget the amazing bass provided by Flea. Chad Smith on the drums is pretty darn good as well, and Anthony is, well, is none other than near perfect.

A lot of the CDs today release something, then find out it’s good, and then use the same concept over and over till everyone grows tired of it (cough, Linkin Park!). But listening to "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is like listening to a "Greatest Hits" album with all of their great songs composed together, since every song represents its own variety, and is great at the same time. Track 3, "Breaking the Girl" is a smooth acoustic track with a recorder instrument going off in the background, but when Track 4 rolls around, it's not called "Funky Monks" for nothing. After this song "Funky Monks," which literally changes style three times throughout the song, RHCP picks it up and notch with a more fast paced, and not to mention vulgar song, of "Suck My Kiss.” Basically, the style literally shifts between every few songs, to give us a great taste in alternative forms of rock...but it all still rocks, and hard.

Everyone knows the songs "Give it Away," and "Under the Bridge." Sure, both are very good songs, but if you bought the album but haven't explored the rest of it, then shame on you. First off, we have "Power of Equality," which is a good track opener. After this four minute rock song, we transition into the second track, "If you had to ask," which calms us down just a bit with Anthony chewing away with some crazy lyrics. I already explained about tracks 3 through 5 , and after the sixth track “Suck My Kiss,” we get to a really slow song, and somewhat depressing as well, called “I Could Have Lied.” The whole song with lyrics like “The stare she bares cut me. I don’t care, you see so what if I bleed,” and the whole slow guitar thing going on makes it a little down. But every album has to have its down songs, so as long as it picks up with a track to get you going.

Which is precisely what happens, with one of the greatest songs on the album, “Mellowship Slinky in B Major.” Just by looking at the title, you can expect a eccentric track to follow. Oh, indeed it is crazy, but it is crazily awesome of a track as well, primarily for the lyrics.

INTERMISSION

Now, for a little break, I’ll take a moment to find some “cool” pop star’s lyrics to a song and compare it with lyrics from “Mellowship Slinky in B Major.” I’ll choose the song “The Math” by Hillary Duff, and we’ll see which is better:

A. You're always trying to figure out
What I am all about
If you don't know what the answer is
Then just shut up and kiss

or

B. Being that I’m the duke of my domain
My hat goes off to Mark Twain
Singing a song about what true men don’t do
Killing another creature that’s kind of blue

See a difference? Although the lyrics in “Mellowship Slinky in B Major” are crazy and spontaneous (which actually is the reason why it’s so great), at least they find inventive things to rhyme about, whereas Hillary Duff rhymes “out” with.... “about.” Ooo, I can feel the originality juices flowing through that powerful one. Okay, enough bashing on current culture, back to the good stuff

INTERMISSION OVER

After “Mellowship Slinky in B Major,” we flip over to “The Righteous and the Wicked,” which isn’t the best on the album since it’s really straightforward, but has an very nice guitar opener. Then we get to the song everyone knows, which is “Give it Away.” No one can really argue that this song does a considerable amount of ruling, although I thought it was thirty seconds too long. Still, it’s really great song showcasing RHCP’s style. But after this, we get an even better song, “Blood Sugar Sex Magik.” This also is one of the better songs on the album with its very cool introduction and its savvy lyrics as well.

“Under the bridge” is another down song, but it’s a lot more upbeat than “I Could Have Lied.” Basically, Anthony talks about his drug problems, and it goes really deep. But luckily, RHCP probably noticed not to dwell on such depressing issues, which is why they made the next four songs, “Naked in the Rain, Apache Rose Peacock, The Greeting Song, and My Lovely Man,” a lot more uplifting. “Apache Rose Peacock,” and “The Greeting Song” are the ones probably worth noticing, with even more psychotic lyrics to come from Apache, and “The Greeting Song” just sounds awesome with its heavy bass. But then comes the ultimate song of the album, and for some reason, I just fell in love with “Sir Psycho Sexy.” Everything about this 8:16 minute song is perfect. Fantastic bass line, awesome guitar and drums, and Anthony telling the hard told story of Sir Psycho Sexy being the man. This song goes on, literally has four different parts to it, and ends in a smooth string ending with guitar and bass playing the background. This is definitely one, if not the greatest RHCP song ever. Dear goodness, this is a rock ballad if I ever heard one, even though the lyrics are, well, a little to “hot” to put on this page. If you can get past that barrier, this song is amazing. After this long song, we have this short song, “They’re Red Hot,” where Anthony spits out lyrics faster than my powerful brain (haha) can compute.

What’s the conclusion of me ranting and raving about every song and aspect of this CD? This CD is perfect. No matter where I search, there isn’t anything to flaw about one the greatest albums ever made. In fact, normally I’d make a “Bad Things” category to list the bad things of this album, but when I put one and two together, there isn’t anything negative to say at all. Let me just say that it’s “Parental Advised” for a reason. But if you don’t mind all of this cursing and whatnot, “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” is a fantastic album in every way shape or form.

The Verdict:
Buy this CD. If you appreciate rock, get out of the house and buy this CD and subject yourself to the unbeatable talent and rock displayed in this album. Since this is the first product that I couldn’t find a grudge with, no matter how much I try, I wholeheartedly recommend this CD to the fullest extent. In musical terms, in order to go forward, we must go back.
