Blast Thru - A Brick Breaking Frenzy for Windows is a breakout style game at a budget price, but is this game really a blast play? Lets find out...
Blast Thru - A Brick Breaking Frenzy for Windows is a breakout style game that mixes crazy powerups, funky music and some not so creative brick layouts into one budget package. The object of Blast Thru is to keep your ball on screen by hitting it with your paddle located at the bottom of the screen. You can move the paddle left and right with your mouse. While doing this you must destroy all of the bricks with the ball. Some bricks will give you powerups. Collect blue powerups to assist you and avoid red powerups which will hurt you. There is a total of 40 different brick layouts for you to blast thru. Puzzle layouts are mostly combinations of bricks randomly placed together. The layouts don't form any specific picture of something as other breakout style games tend to do. Which is fine, but I felt it took away from the overall game experience.
The game offers 5 modes of play which include: Single, Team, Random Level, Choose Level, and my favorite, Level Editor. Single mode starts you at level 1 each time you begin. You can set highscores in this mode which adds an incentive to play more. Team mode lets you and up to 7 other friends play by taking turns on the same computer. Random level mode starts a 1 player game at a random level. Choose level mode lets the player decide what level they would like to start on. Level Editor mode is the coolest feature of this game. It lets you create an infinite number of brick puzzles to play. You can save them to your hard drive or even trade them with other Blast Thru players. So realistically, as long as you are willing to create new puzzles for your self, this game could have an endless replay value.
The graphics are pretty basic mostly being just simple, single colored bricks with a blue background, a white ball, and a tan colored paddle. They are not horrible, but they are not that great either. They are just ok. The music is quite enjoyable and really adds a nice touch to the game overall. Regardless of ok graphics and some not so creative brick layouts, I still really enjoyed the game. I really loved being able to create my own puzzles and then play them. That feature alone, is worth the $10 admission! Definitely check it out!
