Author's Review
I remember seeing this movie at my father's house when I was younger, we had just rented it from the video store because I was and am a horror movie enthusiast. Having never heard anything about this movie I put it into the VCR and prepared for what was to come. Let me say nothing could have prepared me for this movie. I had always believed in reincarnation, I believe that there are things that happen in this would that no earthly method could ever fully explain. Its been a while since I've seen the movie so my memory is a bit rusty but I remember what counts.
The story begins with a middle class family, Janice and Bill Templeton and their daughter Ivy. There is nothing out of the ordinary about her, she is a normal child who is raised by two loving parents. Then one night the parents are awoken by the screams of "Daddy!" coming from their daughter's room. when they enter they find their daughter Ivy frantically running around in her room screaming for "Daddy" even though her father is right in the room with her. And more frightening, when she goes to bang her hands on the window her hands are burned even though the window is cool. After a while Ivy's fit ends and her parents are left to wonder what is wrong with her daughter.
Then a man begins to stalk their house casting a very disturbing eye on their daughter. The parents at first believe that he is a child molester out to harm their child, but then when Ivy has another one of her fits the man comes to her aid and calls her Audrey Rose and somehow manages to soothe her out of her fit. The parents are shocked at how this complete stranger could be able to control their daughter's violent fits and confused as to why their daughter responded to the name Audrey Rose. They find out that the man's name is Elliot Hoover and he tells them a story that no rational person could possibly believe. Many years ago, Elliot Hoover's wife and daughter were killed in an automobile accident. His daughter survived the accident but was trapped inside the car because the windows were rolled up. As the car filled with smoke from the fire that was building up Audrey Rose was slowly being suffocated and as she was dying she beat on the rolled up windows screaming for her daddy that never came. It turns out that the day Audrey Rose died was the exact day that Ivy Tempelton was born and that the soul of his dead daughter resides within the body of their daughter Ivy and that Audrey Rose is reliving the day of her death until someone can release her from her ethereal prison.
I won't tell you anymore about the movie because the true joy of it is watching how the story unfolds and letting the suspense and facts about reincarnation take you into the lives of these people who undergo the most traumatic experiences that life and religion have taught them nothing about. As the movie progresses we learn more about reincarnation and why it happens. The hypnosis sessions are the real edge of your seat moments of the movie, so keep your senses and your mind open when it comes.
Acting wise this is a very good character driven story with good acting by Hopkins, Mason and Swift, the child actress. This movie is definitely for people who want to be scared and me amazed by a world that we know nothing about. I always believed that reincarnation was an interesting phenomenon that everyone should at least find out about, thankfully they made an interesting movie about it so that we could.
