As Long As I'm Reviewing
Date of Review: Dec 15, 2003
The Bottom Line: I think that this would still make a great gift for a fan or someone who wasn't really familiar with what Bobby actually was.
Musical Box Set: As Long As I'm Singing by Bobby Darin
Written by Richard E. Jandrow
After listening to the Bobby Darin Box Set: As Long As I'm Singing, there are several things that come to mind immediately........
Nice presentation...... with the look and feel of real quality....
However, there are several errors, omissions, and concepts, which were or were not present.
First of all, Bobby was a multi-talented entertainer... he represented more than three distinct genres of music as well as his acting, writing, and dancing capabilities. These were not separated or represented properly.
Sure, parts of each were there, but the whole was definitely not the sum of its parts.
My concept would have been to present three complete sets.....
The early rock and rock era........... The pop and later pop era.....
The country and folk era.......
In the rock error, there were many sinful omissions......
1. The early Decca items from 1956 to 1958 were not present.... An important
step in his development and philosophy are missing.
2. None of the instrumentals were present...."Beachcomber" and "Autumn Blues" were representative of his musical ability and part of his life...
Does this mean that you should not buy it? Absolutely not, what it means we Bobby Darin fans have to wait until the box sets are made by actual Bobby Darin Fans.
