Cheap Price, Cheap Parts
Date of Review: Sep 5, 2006
The Bottom Line: Great product, but get the warranty in case of faulty parts.
I bought my MacBook for school, and as such I went though the local bookstore to buy my computer. Thankfully, I picked a package that came equipped with a 3 year warranty, because while I love my MacBook, it has broken several times. Each time, it was a hardware issue that required I send it back to Apple. Other than that, the MacBook is a great laptop computer.
Unlike many laptops in recent days, the battery does not overheat. In fact, it is the coolest part of the computer. Generally, the area between the battery and the display gets very hot, but not bad enough to burn. Also, the laptop can be a little sluggish if you have several applications running, but mainly with turning up/down the volume or screen brightness. The outer case also scratches very easily, and shows scratches much like Apple's iPods.
My main complaint is the DVD+ -RW / CD-RW drive. Whenever the computer is spinning a disc, a powerful and rather loud fan kicks in, and can be quite annoying to you and those around you.
I love the light weight portability of the product, and the including airport and bluetooth. Also, with 2 easily accessible usb2.0 ports, a wireless mouse, amongst other external accessories, are quite easy to use.
The battery life is managable, and if in a pinch, turning down the screen brightness can prolong battery life. Also, to ensure you do not lose any progress/data, the computer warns when it taps into reserve battery power.
One thing I absolutely could not deal without is the lock port. It is simply a tiny hole in the side of the computer, where you can put a special type of lock, generally sold in a bundle with the computer, that makes it easy to secure your laptop while not on the go. A must have!
Overall, I love this computer, and now that it is up and running I have had no issues, even using it for days on end without turning it off (but having to charge it.)
