CS4 rocks!

Date of Review: Oct 31, 2008

The Bottom Line:  If you use Photoshop as part of your job workflow, I highly recommend getting CS4. And even if you just play, if you can afford it, buy it.
I've been a Photoshop user for years, and I'm always impressed by the new functionality in each release, but often have trouble figuring out how to use it. Not CS4! I was lucky enough to be a beta tester. They've made a whole host of changes to the user interface - the impossible is now possible, and the annoying is easy!

Take the adjustment layers. They've completely changed the way they display the tools and how you go between them - and it's so simple and intuitive that you need NO help to figure it out.

And the little annoyances like changing the tool you're using in the palette while you've got some other tool open - for example, opening Thresholds and then needing the eye dropper tool - now you can just go and select it - they work much more independently.

They've also rearranged the order of some tools and options to put the more frequently used at the top. Normally I don't like it when stuff like that is moved around, but in this case it's a much more sensible arrangement.

And of course there are lots of new features, as usual, but I haven't had time to play with those yet.

Even though the beta version of CS4 had some bugs, the minute I started using it I quit using CS3. If you can afford it, consider upgrading!
