King Lear in Atlanta

Date of Review:  Jun 5, 2000
Review: "A Man in Full" simpy stated is a great American novel. Bringing to this opus many of the same themes and concerns he addressed in "Bonfire of the Vanities", the master satirist holds a magnifying glass up to the moral morass that contemporary...

Tom Wolfe's book A Man In Full

Date of Review:  Jan 2, 2001
Review: When Old Atlanta meets New Atlanta, men and women squash and get squashed in the process. It's a beautiful example of social hierarchy in action. This was my first Tom Wolfe read and have since read Bonfire of the Vanities with equal enthusiasm and...

An eye for Atlanta

Date of Review:  Dec 18, 1999
Review: Tom Wolfe proves that he can see through political facades in this pretty decent book with the terrible ending (more on that in a minute). I've lived in Atlanta for more than 26 years and I was impressed by the political dissection that Wolfe did on...

Portrait of Masculinity

Date of Review:  Jan 18, 2000
Review: A Man in Full, like Bonfire of the Vanities graphically portrays the trials and triumphs of the main character(s). I found myself emphatically involved with the lead character in Bonfire of the Vanities, imagining my reactions if ever finding myself...

In a word: Excellent

Date of Review:  May 24, 2001
The Bottom Line: Don't be scared off by the real estate & banking (zzzzzzz). It is just part of the fabric, and Wolfe can make anything fascinating.
Review: My first encounter with Tom Wolfe was The Right Stuff. I don't remember whether I saw the movie first or not. I do remember not buying the book for a long time because the cover was so dull. When I finally did I was amazed.

Many others...

Full of Style

Date of Review:  Dec 20, 1999
Review: Tom Wolfe's Man in Full was, in my opinion, one of the best books of the year and definitely in the top ten of the decade. A huge leap forward in literary style from the ever popular "Bonfire of the Vanities," this novel follows the tales of two...

Impregnating A Horse

Date of Review:  Jan 25, 2000
Review: This book is the best book I've ever read. Now that might not be saying much coming from a senior in high school. But come on, it was 750 pages. I was hooked for each and everyone of them. It is truly a great look into the lives of men in the 1990s...

A Man In Full: A "Bully" read...

Date of Review:  Dec 10, 1999
Review: Wolfe cranks up the irony again in "A Man in Full", and to better effect than in "Bonfire of the Vanities." His characters are fully realized, complex human beings with all the warts, blindnesses, pathos and splendour that describe "real people"...

Better than "Bonfire"

Date of Review:  Dec 12, 1999
Review: Much more human in scope than the renowned "Bonfire of the Vanities", this earthy novel of new and old Atlanta in conflict has a historical dimension that makes it more memorable than its earlier sibling. The plotlines have some similarities, which...

Wolfe Insight

Date of Review:  Feb 5, 2000
Review: Perhaps the secret of a great writer is one who goes to the bone of human existence and squeezes, squishes, and mulls it over. Such is the case of Mr. Wolfe's A Man In Full.

As Atlanta, out of the ashes struggles for identity, the Wolfe...
