Product Description

Director Frangois Truffaut's first feature film, THE 400 BLOWS, is a landmark in French cinema. Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Liaud) is a 13-year-old boy who can't seem to do anything right. His parents yell at him and then bribe him for his love and his promises to work harder in school. Meanwhile, his schoolteacher is out to get him and blames Antoine for everything--turning him into the class clown. As a result, Antoine runs away from school and his difficult family, living on the streets of Paris and committing petty crimes. Nonetheless, things only go downhill for Antoine, descending to a simultaneously painful and beautiful conclusion.

The Boy With a Thorn in His Side, Behind the Hatred Pain Lies

Date of Review:  Jun 27, 2005

Review: Throughout the emergence of cinema, international cinema has always been dominated by Americans. After World War II, that all began to change as Europeans began to take over. The Italians begin to a new wave of neo-realism while Sweden found a hero...

Truffaut's Masterpiece

The Bottom Line: Great introduction to French New Wave cinema.
Review: When I taught film appreciation at the high school level, one of my goals was to get my students to enjoy foreign film. I didn't want them to have an instant negative reaction the first frame an English subtitle appeared on the screen. So I used The...

Too Much Manipulative Self-indulgence

Date of Review:  Apr 4, 2004
The Bottom Line: A classic of French New Wave cinema delivering a highly personal and nostalgic coming-of-age story with technical brilliance
Review: Here's another instance where I feel that I need to explain BOTH why this is a great film and why it is NOT as great as it is widely claimed to be. I'll reserve my major criticism for later, in the "Assessment" section below, and begin with the...
