I order from PFD, and have for many years. Originally, they shipped within 24 hours, which was a dream. Then one day they switched to the current system, 1-2 weeks to ship after your card has been charged. I went nuts and swapped heated emails with Customer Service, very disappointed that there was no warning on their site about the change in shipping policies. I still buy from them, though, only it's a regular level of happiness and not a thrill.
I think they realized they can still get a decent part of the market since 98% of the time pet owners know in advance what they will need. My guess is that it was too expensive to do things as they were doing them; all other net retailers were cutting back their extreme services as well. (I knew all those deals were too good to last.) Maybe they don't order from their suppliers until they have money in the bank from us.
Be that as it may, I wait for the 20% sales, and when I have to I buy at 13%. That helps cover the shipping. I don't pay sales tax (which is 8.25% in NY), and I save myself the bundle of time and energy it would take to drag big bags of food and litter home; the other alternative, buying non-top quality products in small quantities from local stores, is annoying and the cats aren't as happy either. The regular prices are OK and can be excellent when individual products are on sale. A sale on my regular products, or something I really wanted to try like World's Best Cat Litter, plus a coupon? I'm a happy camper on those days.
The slow shipping is the only problem I've ever had, in years.
