The Gift that Keeps on Growing!

I admire the novelty and idea behind Oneshare.com, the online retailer that enables buyers to purchase one share of stock in about 100 companies. The recipient gets an actual unfolded stock certificate from the company--many are elaborate or colorfully illustrated. OneShare also offers a framing service to have the certificate framed in natural wood, mahogany wood, or in some cases, metal.

But the process isn't without its rough spots. Shipping is very, very slow for many people. In our case, it took about 6 weeks to get the certificate in the mail. In the interim, OneShare offers a gift announcement, but its quality is only average and doesn't show the detail of the stock certificate very well in its illustration. Also, only the buyer's name can show up on the gift announcement, so if you're buying for several people (like in my case, I was buying a gift for my dad from his three sons), only the one name shows up on the announcement as the giver.

Unfortunately, our certificate also arrived damaged, with a crease on the stock certificate. More than likely, this was not OneShare's fault, but it was very disappointing. However, after contacting OneShare, they quickly arranged for a replacement. Customer service was exceptional.

Total fees are a little expensive, but we think well worth the cost. OneShare offers a one-of-its kind service, and ordering is very easy. The receiver gets a gift that really does keep growing (usually...) and it is a nice document to display in the home and office.

The gift of stock is especially appropriate for children, teaching them the basics of financial gains and losses and the value of investing. And the certificates for children's companies (like Disney, Toys R Us, Pixar) are colorful, often featuring familiar characters.

Finally, keep an eye on the monthly deals offered at the sites. These offer excellent value, especially when you find one of your friend's or family member's favorite company's stock come up for sale.

With its one-of-a-kind product and superb customer service, OneShare is a unique online retailer. There may be a few rough spots, like slow shipping and rather pricey fees, but in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons.
